A Note on Dog Food Recalls

We were recently asked about dog food recalls.

Just like human food, we’d like to assume that dog food companies are correct 100% of the time regarding which ingredients and vitamins are key to a long, healthy life for our furry friends. Unfortunately, these companies make mistakes, and these mistakes are usually announced quietly to the public.

Our response:

There are dog food recalls all the time, just like any other kind of recall. Most of the time, they’re announced quietly through press releases, and most dog owners won’t hear about them unless they specifically follow pages dedicated to this info.

Just in the past 12 months, multiple companies have recalled select dog food due to issues like elevated Vitamin D levels, grossly insanitary conditions, presence of metal material, and salmonella risk. Most of these companies you’ve probably never heard of, but some are large companies, like Hill’s, PetSmart, and Sam’s Club. The majority of these recalls have already been completed, but it’s worth being aware of the risks with food we put in our dogs’ bellies, just like our own.

How do I make sure my dog gets the healthiest food?

We should all be aware of what exactly we’re feeding our dogs. We all want our furry friends to live happy lives, and a good diet is one of the most important things, just like humans. If you’re considering moving from one brand of dog food to another, intensive research on the company and their food is 100% necessary. Read about ingredients, reviews, how the food is made, sanitary conditions, etc.

The internet is a big place. It may require a deep-dive into a dog forum or local Facebook groups! Just reading the ingredients on the back of the can/bag is better than just handing your dog whatever’s on the shelf at the store. Our dogs are family, and we should feed them high quality food as if their life depends on it, because it does.

On our farm, we use Muenster Milling dog food. We’ve taken multiple visits to their facility, and we can’t recommend them enough. Muenster is a family-owned business that uses locally sourced, all-natural ingredients. They offer foods that are terrific for all breeds, all sizes and for all stages of development. They can be a little pricey compared to what you’ll find on a store shelf, but for good reason. Their owner/CEO ate nothing but their dog food for 30 days to prove it’s worth giving to our 4-legged friends.

We have more information about Muenster, including a 30% discount on your first order here. There are plenty of other great options out there, but we’ve noticed a distinct difference in our dogs’ overall health after moving to Muenster from other brands.
