Question from a Doodle Family!

Another great question from Oklahoma!

Poppy's family asks:

I am looking for dog toys that are strong enough for heavy chewers…Do you have a product line that you recommend?

Thank you.

Our response:

Yes, absolutely – I’d recommend trying a few Kong products. Here are a few examples that we like that will challenge Poppy and should last a little longer for her.

Kong Toy #1 => click here.
Kong Toy #2 => click here.
Kong option #3 => click here.

I’d recommend you stuff these toys with some sort of treat. Peanut butter, healthy dog treats like this => click here, or this => click here. I like to stuff a Kong treat and then “seal” it with peanut butter or canned pumpkin. This will keep them busy for a while. This is good to do when you leave, and she’ll soon learn to like it when you leave for a short while 😊 Or, you can freeze them from time to time. This will give her a different feel and the challenge will be the same trying to get to the treat.  I’ve also heard of people stuffing them with a little cheese, scrambled eggs, or you can even buy Kong brand name items to stuff, like this => click here.

You can even feed her this way. If you buy a large enough Kong toy, put her entire 1/2 cup serving…or whatever the serving is, seal it with peanut butter, and that’s her breakfast! She’ll have to work for it, and perhaps it’ll wear her out some!

Here’s a pretty good video on using the Kong products => click here.

Hope this helps! She’s a very smart dog and will probably get bored easily until she’s an adult. You’ll have to try to constantly challenge her and get her plenty of exercise to prevent the crazy chewing…but even then she’ll probably try to chew. Hopefully these ideas help!

Note:

We’ve talked in the past about how much we love using different kinds of antlers for our dogs that like to chew. We still believe these are an excellent option, but be careful with heavy, aggressive chewers. While we’ve never experienced it, we’ve heard of aggressive chewers breaking teeth on antlers.

If you’d like to try antlers, we highly recommend these moose antlers => Maine Moose Antlers. They are sometimes a little softer (try the paddles, for example), and our dogs have really enjoyed them.
