Item of the Week – Check here for our recommended dog supplies with SPECIAL PRICES!

Once a week we're going to highlight an item we believe will benefit you and your Doodle (or any other dog and sometimes maybe a cat.) Most of these items we've used ourselves, along with, in most cases, a number of alternatives. So we usually have a unique perspective on these things in regards to effectiveness, safety and quality. We hope this helps you and your four-legged family members!

We’ve written quite a bit about crates. We believe that crates are a safe, humane, realistic tool for training dogs. They’re a big help in potty training and they privide other benefits as well, even as the dog grows older. Feel free to contact us if you’d like to chat about the use of crates for your new puppy.

MidWest Homes for Pets: Newly Enhanced Single & Double Door iCrate

Why we love this crate:

  1. Affordable.
  2. Double door.
  3. Divider panel.
  4. Leak-proof pan.
  5. Decent quality.
  6. Folds down for storage.

You'll be tempted to try to save a little money on your pup's dog crate. DON'T DO IT.

We’ve been there. Tempted to save $20 or $30 on a crate, thinking they’re all “basically the same”. They’re not. After purchasing dozens of crates (of all sizes) through the years, we’ve learned that you usually get what you pay for.

Not only do crates help with training, but pups grow to love them as their very own "bedroom".

You can also spend a fortune if you want...

…but you don’t have to. There are some amazing companies out there building extraordinarily safe, almost indestructible crates. Companies like Diggs and Gunner come to mind. Their crates are top quality, but can cost anywhere from $375 up to $1,000. There are others that cost even more. There are even crates built to double as end tables.

Problems we have most often encountered with inferior crates.

For most families, a standard, wire crate will do the job perfectly. But with these especially, quality matters. These are the some of the problems we’ve encountered after buying lower quality crates:

  1. rust
  2. broken latches
  3. broken hinges
  4. flimsy, brittle floors
  5. no divider; no second door

If you have any questions about crate training or crates in general, feel free to contact us. Or, go back and take a look at our 3 part series we posted to our blog several years ago discussing crates and potty training.

In the meantime, this is the very best crate we’ve found, for the money. There are better crates, but you’ll pay for them. But whatever you do, don’t go cheap. You’ll pay for those, too!
