Question from a Puppy Family – First Vet Visit

Here's a question we get from quite a few new Lost Creek families:

When should we take our new little boy in to see the vet?

Our response:

This is one of the most common questions we receive at puppy pick-up. When do I take my puppy to the vet? Or, when should he get his next vaccination?

When you take your new puppy home, he’ll already have started his vaccinations. (He’ll also have been dewormed and will have a microchip.) The vaccinations happen according to a very specific timeline, and sometimes the next vaccination won’t be due for a couple weeks after your puppy goes home. Regardless, it’s a very good idea to go ahead and make a visit to the vet within a few days of taking your puppy home. Just for a check-up.

At your puppy’s first check-up, the vet will review the health records that we’ve sent home with your puppy and will give him his first physical examination. Additionally, most vets will go ahead and check for parasites, which we always feel is a good idea. (While parasites (worms) are very common and aren’t usually serious, they can be a threat to a very young puppy. Click here to read a past post on this subject.) But unless timing is just right, your pup probably won’t get any shots on this visit.

Maverick, the English Labradoodle, worries about his impending vet visit.

Remember, your puppy might have a little anxiety the first couple times he visits the vet. We have adult dogs who still aren’t very comfortable going! So be patient, and be prepared.

As long as everything checks out ok, your vet will schedule your next appointment – for the puppy’s next vaccination. And that’s it! There’s no better feeling than knowing your pup is in good health and ready to play!
