What is “Working and Obedience Intelligence”?

…as defined by Stanley Cohen in The Intelligence of Dogs.

Working and obedience intelligence refers to a dog’s ability to learn from humans.

This type of intelligence is defined entirely by what a breed can learn to do from humans. These skills are not natural in the dog’s environment. While only a part of a breed’s intelligence, this is what most people think of when they think “intelligent breed”. These can be obedience skills, or perhaps skills necessary for guide dogs, search and rescue dogs or police dogs.
