Doodle Intelligence: Why are they so smart?

Almost 25 years ago, Stanley Coren, professor of canine psychology published a book titled The Intelligence of DogsCoren defined three aspects of a dog’s intelligence: instinctive intelligenceadaptive intelligence, and working and obedience intelligence. He applied these different types of learning abilities and then ranked dog breeds according to their overall score. I’ll list his top 5 below, and then we’ll discuss Doodle intelligence.

  1. Border Collie
  2. Poodle
  3. German Shepard
  4. Golden Retriever
  5. Doberman Pinscher

The Doodles at Lost Creek...

Bordoodles...

Border Collies have always been one of our favorite breeds. They’re amazingly talented: intelligent, willing to work and always eager to please. Their athleticism is unmatched  They’re fairly common in ranch country. They live to work with livestock.

The Bordoodle is the combination of the Border Collie, which ranks FIRST on the list for most intelligent breeds and the Poodle, which happens to rank #2 on the list. Using careful consideration, we select the very best Border Collie females to mate with a loving, obedient, silly Poodle. The result is what we consider to be one of the best of the Doodles, and quite possibly, #1 for Doodle intelligence..

Goldendoodles...

Golden Retrievers might be the “All American Family Dog”. One of the most popular breeds in the United States, year after year, their affection and loyalty make them a family favorite. But they’re no slouch when it comes to intelligence either! They rank 4th on the list.

The combination of the Golden Retriever and the Poodle, two of the smartest dogs on the planet, Goldendoodles make exceptionally smart companions. In our opinion, still perhaps the very best family pet you could own, and high on the list for Doodle intelligence!

You're probably going to love a Doodle...

In the Doodle world, you have a wide range of sizes, colors and temperaments to choose from. Bernedoodles are the goofy gentle giants. Newfiedoodles are usually even bigger, and there’s no dog that’s more loving and sweet. Mini-Aussiedoodles are playful, bright, fun and make terrific smaller companions. All of these we recommend for various reasons. And there are others!

But if you want potentially the smartest of the Doodles; if you want a family member you’ll swear is almost human; if you want a fantastic family member who learns quickly, you’ll love the Bordoodles and the Goldendoodles!

This is Sophie the Bordoodle, taken at 8 1/2 weeks old, just a few days after going home to meet her new family. You can see several other videos of her on this post => click here.
